1 Inflammation & Pain Management
Discomfort and Pain are the result of inflammation, your body's response to a wound. Inflammation will send fluid to the area and activate pain receptors to help insure you avoid disturbing the region while the body works to reseal the area and heal. Inflammation peaks typically in the 2-6 days after surgery or a wound.
Ideal Ibuprofen Regimen:
600mg every 6 hours OR 800mg every 8 hours.
- If you already take anti-inflammatory agents for other medical issues, do not add additional medication without discussing with the doctor.
- Tylenol (Acetaminophen) is a different drug class and can sometimes be stacked with Ibuprofen for short term relief. Discuss this with the doctor first.
2 Protecting the Area
Disturbing the Area: Your body will heal any wounds unless there is physical or chemical disturbance to this process. For the first 7 days, it is important to not take any action that will disturb the blood clot or sutured closed surgical site in your mouth. “Dry Sockets” are often the result of losing the blood clot and occur usually around 3-4 days after surgery.
Aggressively swishing rinses and fluids that create turbulence at the surgical site often cause it to begin bleeding again, especially within the first 48 hours. If you are using a rinse that the doctor prescribed or discussed, swish in a non-aggressive fashion by simply bathing the site in the fluid gently back and forth for up to 30 seconds.
3 Diet & Cleaning
- Soft Diet: Stay on a soft diet for at least 72 hours. Eat away from the surgical site and stay hydrated.
- Cleaning Debris: Do not let food debris stay settled on the wound. Clean using doctor-provided rinses or a wet Q-Tip to gently remove debris.
- Our office recommends utilizing the STELLALIFE dental healing rinse product that we stock in office. This product produces significantly improved healing effects and we sell it for cheaper than you can purchase it online.
4 What to Expect
Bleeding: Red saliva is normal for the first 12 hours. If bright red blood is running consistently, apply pressure with gauze for 20 minutes. Alert us to continued bleeding after 12 hours.
Swelling: This is normal healing byproduct. Swelling with infection often includes a bad taste, watery feel, or pus.
Numbness: May linger for more than 24 hours depending on the anesthetic used and surgery location.
